A lot can change in just a week’s time. That is the case for the San Francisco Giants. Entering last week, Michael Morse was beginning to heat up. He was more than making his case for a spot on the 25-man roster. But just like that, Morse is out with a hamstring injury. As of now, this is not the end of the road for Morse. As of now, this is not the end of the road for Morse. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Henry Schulman reports that he will join the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate. This is great news for San Francisco, who could look to add him to the major league roster if he can pick up where he left off this spring.

Unfortunately for the Giants, Morse was not the only player of theirs to go down with an injury last week. San Francisco’s best left-handed reliever, Will Smith, will be sidelined for the entire 2017 season with an elbow injury that requires Tommy John surgery. If an in-house option does not work out early in the year, they could be active via the trade market.

The last injury this week might not be as impactful as Smith’s, but still has some influence on the roster. Potential starting left fielder Mac Williamson is out for a few weeks with a quad injury. Williamson has been competing this Spring Training for the job against Jarrett Parker. While Williamson has had a solid spring, Parker has been one of the better hitters for the Giants during Spring Training. Williamson will most likely start the regular season on the disabled list. He will have to prove himself in Triple-A before being called back up to the majors.

The Giants have shortened the list of potential players making the major league roster by cutting a pair of veterans. They released infielder Gordon Beckham and relief pitcher David Hernandez. Both players requested to be released rather than being sent down to the minors. Hernandez has already signed a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves. Beckham has yet to sign with another ball club.

The best player to every wear the orange and black is back with the organization. The Giants have added Barry Bonds to the organization as a special advisor. Bonds spent last season as the Miami Marlins hitting coach. According to the Giants’ press release, Bonds will be working more with their prospects, traveling to San Francisco’s minor-league teams to work with the players throughout the year.
